My Poker Journey

April Results, Reading List, MTTs and SNG Coaching

Aprils results are pretty “meh” to be honest, but I can’t really complain since I was in England and not playing at all for the better part of 3 weeks. I only actually played 12 days the whole month of April, and I made:

$678.80 from SNGs
$347.57 from Rakeback

$1026.37 Total Profits for April

Not too bad for 12 days of work, especially b/c I probably played an average of 6 hours a day tops, so that’s like $14.26 and hour, and that’s about spot on since I estimate my hourly to be about $15 these days.

I did read 2 poker books (Winning Poker Tournaments One Hand at a Time Volume I by Rizen, Pearljammer and Apestyles & Cash Games (How to Win at No-Limit Hold’em Money Games) Vol. 1 by Dan Harrington) and watch a shit ton of videos this month since I wasn’t playing. I thought Winning Poker Tournaments One Hand at a Time was an excellent read, and it really helped me get my head straight for mixing in some MTTs and even just for multi-table SNGs. I still need to work on when to switch gears and stop opening pots to steal blinds and antes and starting to look for resteal spots. I got really deep in the Main Even Race Final today, a freeroll of players on Full Tilt who earn more than 3000 Full Tilt Points each week (contribute $429 in Rake.) It started with 786 players and paid top 8 each a 10K WSOP main event seat. I ended up getting it all-in against a player who I had out-kicked on a pair of 7s and he caught running diamonds for a flush and busted me in 46th. It was rather frustrating since I could literally taste that final table, but I definitely noticed that I have to work on changing gears, especially after a table change.

I was stealing blinds & antes and had lots of reads on my opponents and a tight table image having only shown down with the best when all of a sudden I got the worst news ever, “re-balancing tables.” Ugh! 8 new opponents who I have no reads on, and more importantly who have no reads on me. I had my PT3 running and every remaining table on the MTT open so I did have some HUD stats, but b/c I had no image, the first 3 pots I opened, against players who were tight to call raises might I add, I got re-shoved on. Guess I know why the call pre-flop raise % was low. I’m currently reading Every Hand Revealed by Gus Hansen and that book is honestly the stone cold nuts. It’s like co-piloting the Aussie Millions with Gus, but without Skype/TeamViewer. Also, Gus uses an inordinate amount of exclamation points and writes generally like an excited person talks. This makes reading the book very conversational and enjoyable!

But alas, this is supposed to be a result post. But seriously, I talked about how I was running last post, and that was pretty recent, so there’s not too much to go on. I’m still playing Super Turbos, and although I think my ROI at end of month was only like 3%, my current sample for the Super Turbos looks like this:

4% ROI over 1288 games for $476 profit. Woopti-shit. At least the Rakeback is pretty much the nuts with superturbos.

I’m going to continue this experiment for a bit longer, while also doing standard speed turbos when I’m doing coaching sessions. I’m going to be putting up a page about accepting students and posting full stats and the whole bit some time over the next couple months, but for anyone who would like to get in as an early student for a reduced rate, shoot me a msg on my contact form. Currently I have a 6% ROI over a 4,226 game sample of Turbo SNGs, almost all of which are 9man Single Table Turbo SNGs.

What I’ll typically do is play a session of Turbos using Skype and Team Viewer so you can watch along with me while I play and I can explain my decision making process and then after we’ll SNG Wiz some close spots. You must have a mic and speakers for this to work, Skype and TeamViewer are both free. Introductory rates are $10/hr to watch a session, $20/hr if you would like me to watch you play a session. Payment by paypal, or site transfer. Everything’s negotiable, and I’m also going to be hosting a group session once a week with my existing students, so if you’re looking to get serious about winning SNGs shoot me a message and we’ll get it going.

Thanks for reading. Please leave comments if you read this far, it motivates me to update more often. Take care and good luck.

    Hi James-
OMG, i have always sat in on the biweekly study sessions on ring games and felt like i was totally out of my element and out of their league. (but i DID come out ahead in Las Vegas last month). Anyway, i have tried putting in the hands (ring game) and just never can stick with it. I ALWAYS have played and always go back to sit n gos. I was totally familiar with a lot of what you talked about last night and i can’t believe that i could play sits the way the other guys play ring- study it and improve etc. I can usually carve out a few hours every day to play. I had stopped tracking my sits on poker tracker a long time ago- but Les can get me started up again (i am computer illiterate unfortunately). I really want to learn the ins and outs- because i am definitely in the right ballpark (i think) ! As i told you before, i’m up 1K over 2 months with the DN’s. Since i read your email etc i’ve been dabbling with the regular T games (i’m on Stars)- i can adapt pretty easily to the differences. I am very weak with the math of the game, but in general i’m pretty good with math. Les (my IT guy- that’s why i keep him around) is going to get me setup with the wizard and i’m sure i’ll have some questions. Right now i probably have some bad habits, like not calling shoves with big hands if it might pop me out before the money - being results oriented, (and many more). I can’t really table select with Stars except for avoiding the guys who have signed up for 10 or 20 games- but it does make perfect sense to me why it is important. Do you have a study group going already? I am very interested to at least give it a shot and see how i do. I’m open to any info or advice you have on how to get going. I’ll start with the wizard and tracker. thanks for any info…. Kimmy
